About Base64 Encoding

Base64 is an encoding algorithm that converts binary data into ASCII characters. It is fundamental in web protocols for embedding binary data into text-based media such as HTML, CSS, JSON payloads, and HTTP request headers.

MIME Format (RFC 2045) & 76-Character Chunking

In Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), encoded lines are strictly limited to a maximum of 76 characters per line, separated by CRLF line breaks. This ensures legacy email relays and mail transport agents do not corrupt or wrap lengthy string data unpredictably.

Data URIs

In modern front-end web development, Base64 strings can be formatted as Data URIs (e.g. data:image/png;base64,iVBORw...) to embed small images, SVGs, or fonts directly into CSS stylesheets or HTML source code, saving additional HTTP round trips.
